The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), is organizing a four-day workshop to help build the skills of 185 teachers working in rural and hard-to-reach areas across the state.
According to a statement jointly signed by SUBEB Executive Chairman, Hon. Samuel Mariere, and the Director of the Teacher Development Department, Mrs. Eru Ezefili, the workshop will run from Tuesday, September 16 to Friday, September 19, 2025. It will be held at Peace Garden Hotel International in Igretakpere (Ovwodokpokpor-Ogor), located in Ughelli North Local Government Area. Each day’s session is set to begin at 9 a.m.
Themed “Reducing Out-of-School Children through Multigrade Pedagogy,” the program aims to equip teachers with the skills they need to handle the unique challenges of teaching in difficult environments where they often work with students of various ages and grade levels all in one classroom.
The statement explained that the residential training will include hands-on sessions, group work, and expert-led lessons designed to build teachers’ skills and confidence. It also highlighted that multigrade teaching is part of a global effort, led in Nigeria by UBEC in partnership with UNICEF, aimed at closing learning gaps and promoting inclusive education for all children.
The organizers emphasized that this initiative highlights the need for creative teaching methods to help close the education gap in rural areas. They also reiterated the commitment of both SUBEB and UBEC to ongoing teacher training and addressing the issue of out-of-school children in Delta State.
