On Day 2 of the three‑day festivities marking the 20th coronation anniversary of His Royal Majesty Elder (Capt.) King Joseph Ijawperebo Timiyan (JP) Ph.D., Torububou 1 of Agbonu and Chairman of the Delta State Ijaw Traditional Rulers Forum, a thrilling football match brought the community together.
The encounter featured Ogulagha FC versus Operemor FC, both eager to thrill a packed and enthusiastic crowd.
Before kick‑off, the Monarch toured the teams, conveyed words of encouragement and emphasised fair play and spirited competition demonstrating his personal affinity for the beautiful game alongside his ceremonial duties.
On his side were fellow traditional rulers including HRM Dr. John Oweiagbe Ekio‑emi (Gbesa I) of the Operemor Kingdom and HRM Monbene III (Pere Amakosu of Ogbe‑Ijoh Warri Kingdom).
They were joined by notable officials such as Hon. Julius Gbabozor Pondi, the Member representing Burutu Federal Constituency; Rt. Hon. (Chief) Funkekeme Solomon, Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor of Delta State; and Ambassador Shedrack Agediga, Chairman of the State Bursary and Scholarship Board underscoring the significance of the celebration for the local community.
The match delivered excitement to the fans with regular time pushing for breakthroughs and ultimately being decided via a penalty shoot‑out, where Ogulagha FC emerged victorious by a 3‑2 margin.
The winning team claimed the grand prize of ₦1,000,000, while Operemor FC secured ₦800,000 in consolation.
This sporting segment not only highlighted the competitive spirit among local teams but also the cultural importance of sport within the realm of royal festivities bringing together tradition, leadership and community engagement in one memorable event.
