2nd Niger Delta Games Torch Begins Nine-State Tour

The journey for the 2nd Niger Delta Games officially began yesterday. The Games Torch started its nine-state tour in Calabar, heading toward its final destination in Benin, Edo State.

This Torch serves as a powerful symbol of unity for the region. It will travel through the capitals of all nine participating states in the Niger Delta.

The event began with a colorful procession led by star athlete and torchbearer, Patience Okon George. Alongside sports officials and other athletes, she led the parade from the U.J. Esuene Stadium to the Governor’s office.

The streets of Calabar came alive during the march. Many young participants wore famous Calabar Carnival costumes while dancing to local Efik melodies. This festive atmosphere was enhanced by loud music broadcast from trucks accompanying the crowd.

Upon reaching the Governor’s office, the team was received by the Deputy Governor, Peter Odey. He represented Governor Bassey Otu at the ceremony. During the reception, Mr. Odey assured the state’s athletes that the government would provide ample equipment and welfare support.

Furthermore, he urged the athletes to compete fairly and strive for victory in every sport. Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, also attended the event. He commended the local committee for organizing such an engaging start to the tour.

The Torch is following a strict schedule to ensure it reaches every state. According to the organizers, the next stop is Akwa Ibom State on February 10th.

Finally, the Torch will arrive at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. On the opening day of the Games, it will be used to light the ceremonial cauldron. This act will signal the official commencement of the 2nd Niger Delta Games.

At the end of the competition, the Torch will be passed to the next host state. Dunamis-Icon Limited is organizing the event, which is generously sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
