Organizers of the Zenith Delta Principal Cup Football Competition for secondary schools in Delta State have given assurances that adequate preparations have been made for this year’s edition of the competition, with the opening match between Zappa Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, and Omu Boys Secondary School, Ibusa, slated for Thursday at Saint Patrick College, Asaba.
At a media conference in Asaba, Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, said through the competition, many students had been identified and groomed as football stars who are now making Delta State proud on both local and international levels.
She expressed gratitude to the organizer for its unwavering sponsorship and commitment to youth and sports development in Delta State.
Ezewu said, ”Their consistent investment over the past editions has not only sustained this competition but has made it a beacon of hope for many young students who aspire to combine education with a career in sports”
The Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education said her ministry would continue to ensure fair play in the competition.
Dr Ifeanyi Atama, the representative of the financial institution, said their sponsorship for the Principal Cup Football Competition was part of their corporate social responsibility to discover young talents that would be nurtured to become professional footballers.

Atama stated, ”The historical significance of the tournament cannot be overstated; it has played a critical role in the emergence of numerous talented individuals who have gone on to represent our state and nation commendably.”

The Principal Cup Consultant, Tony Pemu, hinted that over one thousand public and private secondary schools had indicated interest in the competition, saying that the overall winners will be presented with a brand new school bus with two million naira.
He said money would also be presented to the second, third, and fourth-placed schools in the four-week-long competition.
”This year’s event comes with much fanfare and upgraded quality in terms of match officiating, discipline, and professionalism. The local organizing committee will be putting up tremendous efforts in educating and enlightening participants and critical stakeholders on the new requirements, Pemu stated.
