Delta to distribute 12,000 bags of fertilizers to farmers, plans farm clusters to tackle herdsmen crisis

Delta State Government announced plans to distribute 12,000 bags of fertilizers to farmers to boost food security. Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government, revealed this during a meeting with farmers in Asaba.

The fertilizers – NPK 20:10:10, NPK 27:13:13, and Urea will go to strategic farming groups, including yam, rice, oil palm, banana/plantain, and cassava farmers.

Emu emphasized targeted distribution to ensure equity, following similar efforts with rice and palliative deliveries. Beneficiaries must submit member lists by Thursday for prompt distribution next week.

He also discussed plans to establish farm clusters in the state’s senatorial districts, guarded by farm rangers to address the herdsmen crisis. The government is collaborating with traditional rulers to protect land ownership and prevent illegal occupation.

“The issue of herdsmen and security of our farmlands is not just a concern to us as a state, it is also a national issue. However, we are speaking with landowners and traditional rulers not to lease lands out to questionable individuals because of money”, he said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Barr. Val Arenyeka, thanked the farmers for creating time for the meeting to interface with the government, assuring them of positive outcomes from the meeting.
