The Delta State Internal Revenue Service (DSIRS) has surpassed its revenue target for 2024 within the first nine months, achieving over 100 percent of the projected internally generated revenue (IGR) for the period.
DSIRS had set a revenue target of N110.3 billion for the year, but between January and September, it collected N111.7 billion, representing 101.29 percent of the target.
This achievement follows a similar accomplishment in 2023, where the DSIRS exceeded its revenue goal of N95 billion by collecting N104.08 billion, marking a 120.9 percent increase.
Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, Chairman of DSIRS, shared this update at the “Journalists Hangout,” a platform hosted by the Delta State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Union’s Secretariat in Asaba.
He attributed the success to the judicious management of taxpayers’ money by the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, which has boosted public confidence in the Service and made tax collection easier.
Represented by the Executive Director of ICT and Corporate Development, Mr. Collins Iwebunor, Hon. Ighrakpata highlighted that the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori administration’s landmark projects and people-oriented programs across the state’s three senatorial districts, along with a peaceful business environment, were key factors driving the IGR success.
He emphasized that citizens are now more willing to pay taxes, as they see their contributions effectively utilized for development.
He also called for the continued support of Federal and State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, security agencies, revenue-collecting banks, the organized private sector, professional bodies, unions, trade associations, business groups, traditional institutions, local government authorities, and the media in strengthening revenue collection efforts for the state’s development.
Welcoming the guests, the Chairman of the Delta State NUJ Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, praised the “Journalists Hangout” for fostering closer ties between the media, government stakeholders, and the organized private sector to benefit society.
Comrade Oyowe commended DSIRS for its role in enhancing governance by efficiently generating revenue to supplement other state funding sources, thereby enabling the government to meet the people’s needs.
