2027: Delta PDP leaders allege Oborevwori’s defection plans to APC

Leaders of the Delta state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have demanded clarification over rumours going round that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an open letter addressed to the governor, the group urged him to clarify his position and dispel speculations about his political allegiance.

The letter, signed by prominent party leaders Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, alleged that Governor Oborevwori had been in private meetings with top aides to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

These meetings, they claimed, were parts of a plan to facilitate the governor’s decampment to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP leaders accused Governor Oborevwori of engaging in clandestine dealings with APC leaders at the state and national levels, including sponsoring factions within the APC to weaken its structure in Delta State.

They also alleged that some APC officials in the state were receiving financial incentives from the governor to further his agenda.

In the letter, the group highlighted specific incidents fueling speculations, including the governor’s public endorsement of President Tinubu’s policies at a recent Urhobo Progressives Union gathering, where he reportedly stated, “If President Tinubu fails, I also fail.”

The statement has caused unrest within the PDP, raising concerns about the governor’s commitment to the party’s principles.

The letter further criticized the governor for sidelining loyal PDP members who supported his emergence as governor, accusing him of fostering a “winner-takes-all” governance style.

The leaders argued that these actions were demoralizing party faithful and jeopardizing the PDP’s prospects in the state.

The group demanded a prompt and transparent response from the governor, stating, “We cannot afford to have our party’s fortunes decimated and undermined by your personal ambition.”

They warned that continued silence or lack of clarity would compel them to take necessary actions to protect the party’s interests.

“Since 1999, the PDP has been a dominant political force in Delta State, and the leaders emphasized their commitment to preserving this legacy.”

They urged Governor Oborevwori to reaffirm his loyalty to the party and work collaboratively to address any issues driving his alleged defection plans.

The letter concluded with a firm call on Governor Oborevwori to respect the trust and dedication of PDP members, stating, “We deserve respect and transparency from you. Your actions have serious implications for the collective future of our party.”

The governor had not issued a response to the allegations as of press time.
