The Chairman, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has hailed President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for signing the Act establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, saying the signing has given full legal backing to the institution.
In a letter of appreciation to the President, Tompolo said that the signing has validated the hopes and aspirations for the advancement of learning and development in our region, adding that this magnanimous gesture symbolizes your goodwill towards the Niger Delta and your unwavering commitment to our growth and development.
According to him; “We, the people of the Niger Delta, are overwhelmed with gratitude as I write to express our heartfelt thanks for your historic endorsement of the Act establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State”.
“Your signing of the 2025 Act has given full legal backing to the institution. The Nigeria Maritime University, established in 2014, had been struggling to reach its full potential due to the absence of an enabling Act. But with your courageous decision, the university can now thrive, providing the necessary legal framework for its operations”, he added.
He also said that; “Your visionary leadership has bridged the gap in maritime education in West Africa, where Ghana was previously the only country with a Maritime University. Nigeria is now poised to improve its capacity and manpower in the maritime sector, bringing development to the oil and gas communities in the Niger Delta and curbing youth restiveness in the region”.
“Once again, we express our sincere appreciation for this landmark achievement. Your leadership has rekindled enthusiasm amongst Niger Deltans, and we are confident that your government will continue to prioritize the development of the Niger Delta”, he added.
Also, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the bill establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu kingdom, Delta State into law.
The umbrella body of the Ijaw youths worldwide said the entire Ijaw nation was overjoyed by the signing of the bill, adding that the act by Tinubu represents a significant milestone for the Ijaw nation, the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.
A statement by its spokesman Binebai, also reiterated that the momentous signing demonstrated Tinubu’s commitment to equitable development across all regions of the country.
The body said the Ijaw people were particularly ecstatic as the NMU was poised to become an intellectual asset and authority in both the Nigerian and global maritime industry.
“For years, the Ijaw people, especially the hospitable residents of Gbaramatu Kingdom, have eagerly awaited this day. The establishment of the NMU is a realisation of a long-held dream, marking a new dawn for the Ijaw nation.
“While commending President Tinubu, we urge him to prioritise the infrastructural development of the institution. The extensive land donated for the school at Okerenkoko, the permanent site, remains largely underdeveloped.
“The IYC also requests President Tinubu to expedite the approval of the floating dock in Gbaramatu. This will facilitate practical learning opportunities for students, complementing the theoretical knowledge provided at the institution.
“The floating dock and the school must work in synergy for the benefit of both Nigerian students and the maritime industry.
“We extend our gratitude to the House of Representatives and the Senate for their legislative contributions.
“We are particularly thankful to the Ijaw federal lawmakers who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the NMU. The Ijaw nation is immensely proud of your efforts, and history will recognize your contribution,” the statement read.
