2023 NWFL Super Six kicks off June 6 in Asaba

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six Play-Off round has been fixed for Asaba, Delta State and the matches will commence on June 6 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

According to a statement signed by Modupe Shabi, the Chief Operating Officer of the elite women’s league, the Super Six round of games will run for four matchdays with one match from each group (Group A & B) to be played on each matchday.

Organizers have also said the participating clubs are expected to arrive today with the draw and pre-match meeting billed for the same day at 4pm.

It also said that the tournament proper would begin with Matchday One tomorrow and end with the third-place match and grand final on Sunday, June 11.

Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, title holders Bayelsa Queens, Confluence Queens, Robo Queens and Edo Queens are the six clubs that have qualified for the championship Play-Off.

It will be recalled that 14 clubs participated in this year’s regular season, which kicked off on December 1, 2022, and ended on April 22.

The teams were split into two groups of seven (7) teams, with the top three from each pool qualifying for the final tournament.

In Group A, Edo Queens finished tops with 25 points while Delta Queens claimed the top spot in Group B with 26 points.

Delta State government has assured that this year’s female Super Six contest in Asaba will be the best ever.

The Super Six competition is expected to start on Tuesday June 6th to 11th at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba and the new date was against the earlier fixed date of June 9th to 18th.

The Nigeria Women Female League (NWFL), stated that the change in date was to enable Nigeria meet the exigencies of the June 12 deadline set by CAF for the submission of names of champions in each country for the WAFU zone B play offs ahead the continental champions league.

The sudden change in date notwithstanding, the Chairman of Delta Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, noted yesterday that the state would give the competition the best treatment.

“This is the first competition Delta State is hosting under the tenure of our new Governor, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori.

“He is a great sports lover and as Speaker of Delta House of Assembly, he demonstrated his passion for sports by giving support to all sporting activities we organised under the administration of former Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Governor Oborevwori is excited about the hosting of the female Super Six, and I am sure he will be on ground to cheer the teams.

“We will give all the participating teams, their supporters and football fans from across the country a great treatment that Asaba is known for, we did it before and we will do it again,” Okowa stated.

Edo Queens Storm Asaba For Super Six

Ahead of the 2023 Nigeria Women’s Football League Super 6, Edo Queens have arrived in Asaba, Delta State the venue of the competition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Edo Queens touched down in Asaba on Sunday afternoon and they are looking ready for the battle.
