Deltans intensify call for environmental emergency in rural communities

Deltans intensify call for environmental emergency in rural communities

Barely few hours after the Executive Governor of Delta State Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori assigned the commissioners to their respective portfolios, some well meaning Deltans have called on the Honorable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani as a matter of urgency to intervene in most of the areas in which flood has taken over the means of livelihood of residents in most communities across the state.

Speaking in a telephone conversation with journalists, Mrs. Ruth Onojemudia, Engr. James Obukohwo and others expressed dissatisfaction at the level of damage done to their homes and farmland at a community in Ndokwa West and Sapele local government areas respectively.

They however noted that the damage is caused by the heavy rain which has eventually left other residents in the area in disarray.

”We want to appeal to the Delta state government to come to our aide, the rain has really done more harm than good, flood has taken a better part of our homes, especially in the tropical area of Sapele and Ndokwa communities in the Delta North.

“We call on the relevant authorities especially the ministry of environment to intensify effort and do the needful.”

“The flood this year in most part of the state has put most of us in total quagmire and we therefore call for an Environmental Emergency in Sapele and other areas, even as we again appealed to the Commissioner to take an immediate step in complementing the effort of the Sapele Local Government Chairman, Hon. Eugene Inoaghan who in his wisdom took steps especially in the tropical area of Sapele by opening of canals and water ways for the free flow of the water to ensure an intensive flood control intervention with the excavation, clearing of drainages across the state.”
