Delta ready to protect residents from impending flood – Chairman, Flood Disaster Mgt

The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding residents in flood prone areas within the state and minimizing the adverse impacts of potential flooding.

This assurance came during a recent inspection of ongoing projects at various internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the state by Honourable Terry Etacherure, Co-Chairman of the Flood Disaster Management Committee and Commissioner of the Bureau for Special Duties.

The primary objective of the inspection tour, according to Commissioner Etacherure, was to fulfill the committee’s mandate in ensuring the state’s preparedness for the looming flood threat.

He emphasized the significance of their efforts, stating, “As you are aware of the prediction of the impending flood, the state government has set up a committee to mitigate the impact of flood, and the essence of this inspection is to check our level of preparation so the flood doesn’t take us off-guard.”

During the assessment, Honourable Etacherure expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the proposed take-off camps. He also reassured the public that any camps yet to commence work would do so promptly, with the state government prepared to accommodate affected residents on short notice.

He noted, “Taking stock of the camps we have visited so far, I am very pleased with what we have on the ground. The camps are ready to accommodate Deltans who would be impacted by the flood.”

The inspection covered various locations, including the Ogbe-Afor Camp in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Utagbe-Ogbe Camp in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Alaka Grammar School Camp in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, and Patani Camp in Patani Local Government Area. These visits included assessments of health, storage, kitchen, and sanitary facilities.

Notable members of the inspection team included Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health; Prince Gregory Ejohwomu, Permanent Secretary of the Bureau for Special Duties; Mr. Karo Ovemeso, Director of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other management staff of the bureau.

The state government’s proactive measures and commitment to flood preparedness demonstrate its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents in the face of potential natural disasters.
