Delta govt to prosecute contractors executing shoddy jobs - Comm. for Works, Izeze

Delta State government, at the weekend, threatened to prosecute any firm found executing shoddy jobs, both at the urban and rural areas in the state. Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, stated this while inspecting some road projects in Ughelli metropolis, Ughelli North Council of the state.

Izeze said the days when contractors built poor and substandard roads were gone, warning that any firm found executing shoddy jobs would face the law, while they would be made to refund every kobo spent by the government.

According to him, the government is committed towards quality and accelerated infrastructural renewals in developing the state, especially in the urban centres; hence, the regular visits to project sites across the state to ascertain whether jobs awarded are being executed in accordance with the Bill of Quality (BOQ).

The Commissioner explained that good road infrastructure is a key component of the Governor Sheriff Oborevrwori’s administration, and would, therefore, ensure all jobs done stand the test of time.

Izeze, a two term member of the Delta State House of Assembly, explained that the four major link road projects in Ughelli Urban area were awarded to decongest the daily gridlock at the Otowodo Junction of the Ughelli-Patani East-West Expressway and environs.

He, however, commended Obakpor Engineering Company, the contracting firm handling the projects, for high quality job and speediness of work, few weeks after being mobilised to site.

“For long term durability, the state government decided to award concrete roads design with drains on both sides to distill water to natural waterways.

“I am impressed with the projects so far, especially the pace of work done, just a few weeks after the contractor was mobilised to site.”

Chairman, Obakpor Engineering, Olorogu John Oguma, said his firm has been providing bridges in the state for decades, assuring Deltans of more quality services.

He said the company will continue to invest in the best equipment and machines to give its best to the government and people of the state.
