The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has arrested and detained officers involved in the alleged shooting of the vigilante leaders of Idjerhe Kingdom and two others in Ethiope West Local Council of the state.
The CP’s action followed recent protests by the community’s women who demanded that those behind the shooting of the vigilante operatives be brought to book.
Confirming the development, the Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the CP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to commence full-scale investigation into the incident.
Consequently, officers involved were identified and ordered to undergo internal disciplinary action.
According to Edafe, the CP reiterated that it’s not in the character of the command to trample on the rights of citizens or use rifles without recourse to Force Order 237.
The CP assured that the affected officers will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and Regulations, to serve as a deterrent to others.
He noted that under his watch, such conduct by officers of the command will not be tolerated.
He, therefore, appealed to members of the public, particularly indigenes of Idjerhe Kingdom, and families of the injured vigilantes who are currently receiving treatment, to remain calm, assuring them of justice.
