The Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education, Hon. Charles Chukwuemeke Emetulu, has commended the Management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, for the judicious utilization of its internally generated revenue (IGR) and provision of high level manpower to the society.
Hon. Emetulu gave the commendation today in Abraka when he led members of the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education on a working visit to the university for an on-the-spot assessment of the utilization of funds so far appropriated for various projects in the University by the state government.
The lawmaker praised the Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, and the Management of the university for efficiently managing its internally generated revenue and interventions funds from federal government agencies to build faculty complexes, classrooms and laboratories.
He emphasized that the purpose of the working visit was to verify the proper accountability of both public funds allocated for state government projects in the university and those generated internally by the institution.
He also commended the university authority for being able to maintain an uninterrupted academic calendar, produce high quality graduates and hold convocation annually.
He pointed out that the fact that the current Executive Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, the current Deputy Speaker of the Delta State of Assembly, Hon Arthur Akpovwovwo, himself, Hon Emetulu, and a host of other top officials in government and the private sector, graduated from the university, shows that the university is at the forefront of providing high quality manpower to the society.
Earlier in his comment at the occasion, the Honourable Commissioner for Higher Education (the supervisory ministry of the University), Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, thanked the committee for the working visit geared towards ensuring accountability and assessing the needs of the university in order to know how best to support the institution’s development.
He specifically pleaded with the lawmakers to support the state government’s effort to complete the ongoing Senate Building of the university, which according to him, will not only become one of the largest university senate buildings in the country but also greatly enhance the smooth administration of the university.In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, thanked the lawmakers for the visit and for always supporting the university through the enactment of enabling laws, budgetary allocations and monitoring of state government projects in the university.
Prof Egwunyenga informed the visiting team that, according to the latest higher education report, the university is currently ranked 22nd among all universities in Nigeria, the 3rd Best State University in Nigeria, and the Best State University in the South-South and South-East Regions of the country because of the support from the State Executive Council and the House of Assembly.
He solicited a sustenance of the mutually beneficial interactions by both Management and the Team in the interest of university, the government, Delta State, the country and the world in general.
