Aniocha South LGA Chairman gives herders one-month ultimatum to comply with anti-open grazing Law

To tackle rising insecurity and safeguard farmlands, the Executive Chairman of Aniocha South LGA, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, has given herders a one-month ultimatum to comply with the Delta State Anti-Open Grazing Law.

Chukwunwike, who gave the directive during a security stakeholders’ meeting in Ogwashi-Uku, cited the ongoing destruction of crops and violent farmer-herder clashes as threats to peace and food security. “We’ve tolerated enough. After this grace period, enforcement will begin in full and without compromise,” he stated.

Chukwunwike directed local vigilantes and law enforcement agencies to begin coordinated surveillance and enforcement. Legitimate cattle rearers will also be documented and profiled for effective monitoring.

The decision was welcomed by stakeholders, including Islamic and youth leaders.

Alhaji Nwadu Ibrahim Chiedu, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (Delta State), expressed full support and urged herders to embrace ranching.

The 2021 Anti-Open Grazing Law prohibits the movement of cattle on foot and promotes ranching to curb insecurity and land degradation.

Chukwunwike reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to protect lives, livelihoods, and ensure lawful coexistence.

Present at the meeting were top security officials including ACP Daniel Akpan (Area Commander), CSP Okoyomon (DPO Ogwashi-Uku), CSP Ande Joshua (DPO Nsukwa), Mrs. Nkiruka Okeke (DSS), and Mrs. Helen Onyekwere (NSCDC), as well as farmers, youth leaders, and other community stakeholders.

Also in attendance were Vice Chairman Hon. Patricia Ekwutoziam Adolue, Council Secretary Hon. Prince Tony Ebube, HPM Mr. Austin Akaeze, Supervisors, and representatives of Fulani herders and livestock associations.
