The Delta State House of Assembly has pledged that the proposed Landlord/Tenancy Bill will receive thorough legislative review to ensure it reflects modern housing realities and fairly protects the interests of both landlords and tenants in the state.
The assurance was given by Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, Chairperson of the House Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl Child Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Support Services, and the Committee on Urban Renewal, during a public hearing on the bill at the Assembly Complex in Asaba.
In her opening remarks, Hon. Anyafulu explained that the proposed law aims to create a clear and comprehensive legal framework for the housing sector by outlining the rights, duties, and responsibilities of landlords, tenants, and agents across Delta State.
She added that the bill seeks to repeal the outdated Rent Control and Recovery Law of 1977 and replace it with a more modern legislation that reflects today’s housing and tenancy realities.
Hon. Anyafulu emphasized the vital importance of housing to Delta State’s social, economic, and political growth, describing it as a key foundation for human wellbeing and community stability.
During the public hearing, representatives from the Customary Court of Appeal, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning, the Association of Tenants and Agents, and the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers presented their inputs, suggesting specific amendments to make the proposed law more effective.
Lawmakers present at the session included the House Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, alongside Hon. Oloye Pereotu, Hon. Ferguson Onwo, Hon. Austine Uroye, Hon. Mathew Omonade, and Hon. Bernard Odior.
The hearing also drew officials from various ministries, agencies, and stakeholders in the housing sector from within and outside Asaba, many of whom commended the Assembly for its forward-looking efforts to update and strengthen the state’s housing legislation.
