The Asaba Kingdom has been plunged into mourning following the passing of one of its most respected leaders, Obi Chief Peter Nwanze Oduah—fondly called Odogwu Ahaba—who died on November 13, 2025.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 19, His Royal Majesty, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge (SAN, OON), described the loss as “a deeply traumatizing experience” for the entire Asaba community and a personal heartbreak for the royal throne.
The Asagba explained that Odogwu Ahaba was not only the second-highest-ranking figure in Asaba’s traditional leadership but also his cousin, which made the tragedy even more painful. He described the late Chief Nwanze Oduah as “one of the most Asaba-focused personalities of our generation,” a man who dedicated his life to the growth and protection of the kingdom. He hailed him as a brave and unwavering defender of the community.
The monarch added that Asaba has lost a towering figure, and the gap left by his passing will remain for a long time. Still, he encouraged the people to find strength in the legacy of courage, service, and dedication embodied by the late Odogwu Ahaba.
To honour the departed chief, the Asagba announced the following traditional observances:
* All markets in Asaba will close on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the day Chief Nwanze Oduah will be laid to rest according to Asaba customs.
* A one-week mourning period will follow immediately after the burial. During this time, all activities—including meetings—will be suspended, except in emergencies.
The Asagba extended heartfelt condolences to the chief’s family, his wife and children, and the entire Umuonaje quarters, especially the Umuagulu people of the Mogbue family. “The passing of Obi Chief Nwanze Oduah has diminished us all; I ask every son and daughter of Asaba, wherever you are, to take heart,” he said.
He concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of the soul of Odogwu Ahaba.
