The Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge, has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to facilitate the upgrade of the Asaba Airport to international status, allowing it to accommodate regular international flights and serve as a major transit hub for large aircraft.
The monarch made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the minister in Abuja on Wednesday, where he led a high-profile delegation, including Hon. Ngozi Okolie Lawrence, who represents Delta North in the House of Representatives, and Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Abuah-Olejeme, a notable Delta politician.
Commending Keyamo’s efforts in transforming Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Asagba emphasized that Asaba, given its strategic importance, deserves a fully functional international airport with increased flight frequencies.
He noted that the airport’s potential remains largely untapped and urged the minister to expedite action on its elevation.
Beyond aviation infrastructure, the royal father also raised concerns about youth development in aviation, highlighting the increasing number of young, talented pilots from Delta State who are undergoing training but require further government support.
He requested the minister’s intervention in facilitating public-private partnerships to help these aspiring pilots realize their dreams.
In his response, Festus Keyamo expressed regret for not having visited the Asagba earlier, assuring the royal father that addressing these concerns was high on his agenda.
He acknowledged Asaba Airport’s strategic location and potential, agreeing that it should be developed into the aviation hub of the eastern region.
He further revealed plans to engage airport concessionaires to fast-track its international certification while also partnering with domestic and international airlines to facilitate seamless connections for travelers.
Regarding youth pilot training, Keyamo promised to meet with young Delta pilots to explore ways they could be integrated into Nigeria’s aviation industry through possible partnerships and government-backed initiatives.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to fostering development in Delta State, particularly in the aviation sector.
The Asagba was accompanied by a delegation that included: Obi Chief Nwanze Oduah (Odogwu of Asaba), Obi C. Ajufoh, Chief Amb. Charles Onianwa, Chief Peter Ejiofor, Chief Victor Nwose, Chief Fred Okonta, Chief Dr. Ken Mordi, Chief Phillip Ejike Nwokolo, Ogbueshi Godfrey Odogwu, Ogbueshi Sylver Oforgu, Chief Barr. Chuk Nduka-Eze (Chief Press Secretary), and Mr. Ebodi Eluaka (Chief Protocol Officer).
