Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a major development in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The registration ceremony took place on Monday, following Atiku’s announcement to ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa over the weekend. The former vice president’s aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development in a statement obtained by PUNCH Online.
Videos and photos from the event showed Atiku’s convoy arriving amid cheers from supporters, who beat drums, sang, and carried placards bearing his image. Atiku waved to well-wishers from his vehicle before receiving his ADC membership card.
Shortly after the registration, Atiku took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the development, posting, “It’s official. –AA.” The move cements Atiku’s formal association with the coalition party, which he had previously endorsed as a platform for opposition figures including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal to mount a challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
