Bridging Past and Present: Delta Speaker Rallies Former Lawmakers for Stronger Legislative Future

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has stressed the need for unity, mentorship, and continuity in strengthening legislative governance as he met with non-sitting members of the Assembly during a special interactive session.

The session, held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Vinmilan Hotel in Asaba, brought together past presiding officers and former legislators. It doubled as a reunion and a moment of reflection on how far legislative governance in Delta State has come since the Assembly was established in 1992.

In his keynote remarks, Speaker Guwor described the event as “a bridge between the past and the present, and a foundation for the future,” recognizing the vital contributions of previous lawmakers to the state’s democratic development.

He also commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori himself a former two-term Speaker calling him “a symbol of legislative continuity and leadership maturity.”

The forum focused on two key themes: building harmonious consensus amid diverse and competing interests for inclusive governance, and navigating the ‘banana peels’ and hidden challenges within the Legislature.

Speaking on the first theme, Guwor emphasized the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and tolerance among legislators, noting that the ability to build consensus is a true indicator of democratic growth.

Speaking on the second theme, the Speaker acknowledged the realities and challenges that come with legislative work—from political intrigues to external pressures—urging lawmakers to stay anchored in prudence, mentorship, and loyalty to the Constitution.

Guwor reiterated the 8th Assembly’s commitment to working closely with the Executive under the M.O.R.E. Agenda, assuring that the legislature will continue to back policies and initiatives that drive sustainable development and deliver quality services to the people of Delta State.

He also thanked the non-sitting members in attendance, describing their participation as “a source of inspiration and a reminder of the enduring spirit of legislative service.”

The opening session ended with votes of thanks from representatives of both current and former lawmakers, who commended the Speaker and the organizing committee for putting the event together. A panel discussion followed, focusing on key strategies for deepening legislative harmony and strengthening institutional development in Delta State.
