CAF Increases Total Prize to Over ₦1.5 Billion, Super Falcons Aim High

The Super Falcons of Nigeria could come home with over ₦1.5bn if they win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024 as the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) announced a substantial increase in the prize money.

The winner’s prize has been doubled by 100%, while the total prize money for the competition sees a 45% increase for the tournament scheduled to commence on 5 July.

Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, affirmed the organisation’s continued dedication to advancing women’s football across Africa.

He stated that the significant prize money increment is intended to contribute directly to better salaries for women footballers, coaches, and staff members, underscoring a commitment to professionalising the women’s game.

“The quality and standard of Women’s Football in Africa is consistently improving and is world-class,” Motsepe said.

He expressed enthusiasm for the anticipated surge in fan attendance, broadcasting viewership, and sponsorships for the WAFCON Morocco 2024, predicting the tournament will be ‘enormously successful.’

Under the new prize money structure, participating national teams in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 will receive the following:

Winner: USD 1,000,000.
Runner-up: USD 500,000.
Third place: USD 350,000.
Fourth place: USD 300,000.
Quarter-finalists (4 Teams): USD 200,000 each.
Third place in the group: USD 150,000.
Fourth place in the group (3 Teams): USD 125,000 each.

The total prize money for the tournament now stands at USD 3,475,000.

This significant financial boost is expected to further incentivise excellence and growth within women’s football on the continent.
