Catholic Diocese of Warri Mourns Passing of Bishop John Afareha

The Catholic Diocese of Warri is saddened to announce a great loss. Bishop Emeritus John Okeoghene Afareha has passed away. He died on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

Bishop Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, the current Bishop of Warri, shared the news. He signed an official notice from the Diocese. The message showed deep sadness. It described the late Bishop as a devoted shepherd and a father to his followers.

“It is with profound sorrow, yet with a firm hope in the resurrection, that we announce the passing of our beloved father and Bishop Emeritus,” the statement read.

Bishop Afareha began his church service many years ago. He became a Catholic priest on December 30, 1973. Later, he was made a Bishop on May 14, 1997.

Throughout his time as a priest and Bishop, he was known for his strong faith. He was dedicated to serving God and caring for his church members. The Diocese said, “Bishop Afareha lived his life in faith and obedience to the will of God.” He touched many lives during his journey.

Even after retiring, he remained active. He was a man of prayer. Many saw him as a cherished father figure in the community.

The Diocese has asked for God’s mercy on his soul. They prayed, “May the Lord grant him eternal rest, and may perpetual light shine upon him.”

The statement also asked for prayers for the entire Diocese. People should also pray for Bishop Afareha’s family. And for everyone who is grieving his passing.
