Following flood warning by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government, Dr Lucky Avweromre has embarked on the desilting and opening of Canals and Water Ways at Gbaregolor Community.
The desilting and opening of the canals and waterways is not only for flood control but also to enable the residents ferry their farm produce from farms to the Gbaregolor market.
The Gbaregolor community has been on the receiving end of flooding year in year out due to perennial flooding of the community caused by blocked canals and waterways.
However, the roar of the swamp buggy brought in by the Ughelli South Local Government to desilt and open the blocked canals and waterways is an harbinger of hope to the people of Gbaregolor and neighboring communities.
The exercise, which took place in Diobri Quarter, drew commendations from community leaders, including the Deputy Leader of the Legislative Arm of Ughelli South Local Government and Councilor representing Ewu 2, Honourable Andrew Eti, the Community Chairman, Mr. Praise Ewutanure, the Community Youth Leader, Usman David and Elder Jeremiah
Speaking the Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government, Dr Lucky Avweromre who monitored the exercise, emphasized the need for the exercise especially as heavier rainfalls are imminent.

Dr Avweromre who was represented by his Supervisor for Environment, Emergency and Disasters, Joy Aguonigho, warned the people of Gbaregolor community against blocking the canals and waterways with refuse and waste.
Former Councilor for the area, Honourable Henry Gbejimor, appealed to the Federal and State Governments for assistance in opening other connected canals within Gbaregolor riverine areas.
The successful desilting of the canals and waterways in Gbaregolor community is a testament to the Ughelli South Local Government’s commitment to promoting a sustainable and environmental friendly community.
