Court Case Against Anthony Joshua’s Driver Adjourned to January 20

The Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State has adjourned the court case Anthony Joshua driver to January 20, 2026. This follows the formal arraignment of the driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, on a four-count charge.

The Ogun State Police Command brought the charges following a tragic accident involving a Lexus SUV. The incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while the driver was transporting the former world heavyweight champion.

▌Details of the Arraignment and Bail

During the court session on Friday, January 2, the police formally presented the charges against Kayode. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the driver faces several serious allegations.

Consequently, the court granted the defendant bail set at ₦5,000,000. To meet the bail conditions, the driver must provide two reliable sureties. After the bail ruling, the court moved the next hearing to late January to allow for further legal proceedings.

▌Understanding the Four-Count Charge

The police have accused the driver of violating several sections of the Federal Highway Act. The specific charges against Kayode include:

  • Dangerous driving causing death: This is contrary to Section 5(1) of the Act.
  • Reckless and negligent driving: This violation falls under Section 6(1).
  • Driving without due care: This includes causing bodily harm and property damage under Section 7(1).
  • Driving without a license: Kayode allegedly operated the vehicle without a valid National Driver’s Licence.

Furthermore, the police emphasized that these charges reflect the severity of the crash that claimed two lives.

▌Background: The Tragic Accident

The accident occurred last Monday on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua and two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Unfortunately, the SUV collided with a stationary truck.

The collision resulted in the immediate deaths of Ayodele and Ghami at the scene. While the vehicle sustained heavy damage, both Anthony Joshua and the driver escaped with minor injuries.

▌Anthony Joshua’s Recovery and Tributes

Following the crash, medical professionals treated Anthony Joshua at a nearby hospital. Doctors discharged him late Wednesday evening after confirming he was clinically fit. Currently, the boxer is continuing his recovery at home.

In an emotional gesture, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday. They went to pay their final respects to his late friends, Ayodele and Ghami. Because the victims were not local residents, their bodies were prepared for repatriation shortly after the visit.

The legal community is now watching the court case Anthony Joshua driver closely as it resumes on January 20.
