Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of child abduction in Agbarho, located in Ughelli North Local Government Area part of the district he serves.
In a statement released on Friday, the senator highlighted the troubling trend, noting that “in recent months, over six children most between the ages of three and ten have gone missing, leaving families shattered and the entire community on edge.”
He went on to say, “The situation worsened in June with four reported disappearances, which led to a protest by angry women on September 16. Sadly, it took a tragic turn on September 24 when a woman accused of attempted kidnapping was lynched by a mob.”
He added, “While the frustration in the community is understandable, resorting to mob justice only worsens things and endangers innocent lives.”
To the bereaved families, the lawmaker offered his deep condolences and solidarity.
He said: “Your grief is shared by all of us. I promise to keep pushing for answers and justice at the highest levels. Every missing child represents a future we can’t afford to lose, and I will not stop until they are found and peace is restored.”
He urged the Delta State Police Command, Ughelli Area Command, and the relevant federal agencies to step up investigations, increase patrols, and join forces with NAPTIP to dismantle any networks behind these abductions whether linked to ritual practices or trafficking.
He pointed out that the recent rescue of eight trafficked children in Delta shows that taking proactive steps can really make a difference. He then called on community leaders, especially under the leadership of the Ovie of Agbarho, to keep up their efforts by strengthening neighbourhood watch groups, raising parental awareness, and working closely with schools.
“Let’s not resort to jungle justice,” he said. “Instead, let’s turn our anger into unity, stay alert, and support our law enforcement agencies. As your Senator, I’m fully committed to pushing for better security measures and stronger laws to protect Delta Central. Together, we can beat this threat and bring lasting peace to Agbarho, Ughelli North, and all of Delta State.”
