Davido Bets $25,000 on Both Teams Scoring in Nigeria’s AFCON Opener

Afrobeats superstar Davido has generated considerable buzz by publicly placing a substantial $25,000 bet on the Super Eagles’ opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The artist posted his Stake betting slip on Sunday, backing ‘both teams to score: yes’ for Nigeria’s Group A opener against Equatorial Guinea.D

Davido’s wager, placed at 3.86 odds, carries a potential payout of $96,500 if both teams find the back of the net. The match in question was Nigeria’s first fixture of the 2023 AFCON, which was held in Ivory Coast earlier this year, not a future tournament in Morocco as initially suggested in some reports.

The Super Eagles, featuring star striker Victor Osimhen, were widely considered favorites for their opening encounter. However, Davido’s specific bet on both teams scoring has drawn mixed reactions from fans. Supporters view it as a confident prediction of a high-scoring victory for Nigeria, while critics have questioned his implied doubt about the team keeping a clean sheet and have also raised concerns about the promotion of gambling.

As a prominent brand ambassador for the betting platform Stake, Davido’s public display of his wager inevitably adds a promotional element to the national excitement and pride surrounding the AFCON, blending celebrity endorsement with the passion of football fandom.
