DELSU Expels Student for Filming and Posting Dying Colleague on TikTok

The management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has expelled a 200-level Biotechnology student, Ms. Ezi Ugoma, for filming and uploading a distressing video of a dying student at the university’s health centre on TikTok.

The disciplinary action follows widespread outrage over the viral clip, which university authorities described as “a grave act of insensitivity and gross misconduct.”

According to an official memo dated October 21, 2025, the university’s Senate Committee on Student Discipline found Ms. Ugoma guilty of violating the institution’s matriculation oath and breaching the code of conduct expected of students.

The letter, signed by Principal Assistant Registrar (Students’ Affairs), Ughwumiakpor A., on behalf of the Deputy Registrar, confirmed that Ugoma has been rusticated for four semesters, beginning from the 2025/2026 academic session, and will only be eligible for reinstatement in 2027/2028.

The incident reportedly occurred at the university’s health centre, where a female student collapsed from complications allegedly linked to a botched abortion. Instead of assisting or seeking immediate medical help, Ugoma was said to have recorded the victim’s final moments and posted the footage on her TikTok account, sparking outrage across social media platforms.

University authorities described the act as “morally reprehensible and a violation of the core values of empathy, decency, and confidentiality.” DELSU reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and maintaining an environment that prioritizes respect for human dignity.

A senior university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized that the institution would not tolerate actions capable of bringing its name into disrepute or undermining its reputation as a centre of moral and academic excellence.

The disciplinary sanction against Ugoma has since attracted mixed reactions among students and the public—while some have applauded the university’s stance as necessary for restoring ethical order, others have called for improved student counselling and awareness on responsible social media conduct.
