DELSU orders probe into bloody students’ week

The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Prof Andy Egwunyenga, has ordered an investigation into the violence that erupted during the social activities forming part of the Students’ Union Week.

This was contained in a statement released by the university and obtained by PUNCH on Saturday.

It was gathered that the Students Union week was on Wednesday marred with a disagreement between the Union’s president, Comrade Mathias Jimson, the president of a department, and some event attendants.

It was gathered that the department had organised a welcome party on Wednesday for all 100-level students.

However, the union’s president was said to have stormed the event and ordered it to be shut down because the union’s week should be prioritised.

The disagreement, according to several sources, erupted into a physical brawl that led to one of the guests in the event suffering an injury.

The Vice-Chancellor, reacting, said, “The University administration received with sadness and strong disapproval the report of violence and disorderly conduct involving some students and Students Union officials at the Pre-Degree Hall and other parts of the university between 6.39 pm and 7.30 pm on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“This is utterly unacceptable and highly condemnable. It is a breach of the extant regulations of the University Governing the Conduct of Students.

“After a review of the report, a committee has been constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the unfortunate incident. All those found culpable after due investigation shall be dealt with by extant university regulations.

“In the meantime, the Vice- Chancellor has approved that, the remaining events of the Students ‘ Week continue peacefully while awaiting the report of the committee. All students are therefore urged to conduct themselves properly pending the outcome of the investigation,” the statement concluded.
