Delta Assembly condemns Okuama killings, commiserates with families of fallen soldiers

The Delta State House of Assembly has issued a strong condemnation of the tragic killings of 16 soldiers in Okuama community, Ughelli South local government area.

The motion, raised during Tuesday’s Plenary session by Hon Festus Utuama of Ughelli South State Constituency, prompted unanimous agreement among lawmakers. Presided over by the Speaker,  Rt. Hon Emomotimi Guwor, the Assembly fervently denounced the unprovoked attack, calling for immediate action.

In his impassioned plea, Hon Utuama urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to swiftly engage security agencies in investigating and bringing the perpetrators to justice. He further proposed the formation of a commission of inquiry to address the root causes of the conflict between Okuama and Okoloba communities.

Deputy Speaker Arthur Akpowowo, Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi, and other members, including Prince Emeka Osamuta and Charles Emetulu, cautioned against retaliatory actions by the military. Instead, they advocated for targeted efforts to identify and prosecute the culprits, protecting innocent civilians from reprisals.

Lawmakers emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, particularly for vulnerable groups, echoing calls for prudence from both the military and local authorities.

Speaker Guwor reiterated the assembly’s stance, emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation and honoring the fallen soldiers with a moment of silence. The resolution will be promptly forwarded to Governor Oborevwori for immediate action, underscoring the assembly’s commitment to justice and peace.
