The Delta State House of Assembly has begun discussions on a new bill that seeks to repeal the Rent Control and Recovery of Residential Premises Law of 1977 and replace it with a modern Landlord and Tenant Law, 2025.
The deliberation followed a public hearing held at the DTHA Press Centre in Asaba.
Leading the session, the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl Child Entrepreneur Services, and Physical Planning and Urban Renewal, Bridget Anyafulu, explained that the proposed law focuses on regulating landlord–tenant relationships, tenancy agreements, rent payments, and rent control. She emphasized that the new legislation aims to strengthen the legal framework governing the housing sector.
Anyafulu noted that the bill is designed to create a fair and stable housing system that benefits landlords, tenants, and agents alike. Joined by Oloye Pereotu and other committee members, she encouraged all participants to make valuable contributions to the legislative process.
The committee also received written and oral inputs from various stakeholders, including representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Association of Organized Realtors, landlords’ and tenants’ associations, the Court of Appeal, real estate practitioners, and members of the private sector.
