Delta Commissioner Makes Case for Increased Budgetary Allocations for Technical Education

The Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr Smart Ijeoma Ufoh, says about 19 billion naira is needed as budgetary estimate to execute the capital projects and meet recurrent expenditure for the ministry in 2026.

He stated this in Asaba while defending his ministry’s 2026 budget estimates before the Ministry of Economic Planning budget defense committee.

Ufoh hinted that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had given approval for the review of the ministry’s ongoing projects which are at different stages of completion.

He stated , ”What we are requesting for is over 19 billon naira because we have outstanding commitment of ongoing projects of over 14 billion naira but we were given allocation of 12 billion naira. Our amiable governor gave approval for review of some of our projects which are at different stages of completion. Contractors have gone back to sites”

The Delta State Commissioner said the newly built Omadino Technical College had commenced academic activities with provision of school furniture and laboratory equipment.

Ufoh said, ”The structures of Omadino Technical College are complete. Our amiable governor has equally approved the equipment which they are supplying. We are finished with the furnishing, with few equipment yet to be supplied. That notwithstanding, the newly admitted students have started learning. Now , we need more teachers”

”The ministry is currently constructing four new model technical colleges — located in Irri, Akugbene, Ekiagbodo, and Ogharaki — all of which have been approved by the state government. With these addition, Delta State now has a total of 14 technical colleges, ten of which are already fully operational”, Ufot stated.

Ufoh described the new model colleges as top-notch facilities built to modern standard and equipped with the infrastructure required to deliver quality technical education. He explained that the structures are at various stages of completion, reflecting the state government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for practical learning and innovation.

“We are working tirelessly to complete the remaining four model technical colleges and ensure that all 14 institutions are functioning optimally,” he said. “Our goal is to make Delta a leading hub for technical education and skills acquisition in Nigeria.”

Speaking further, the Delta State commissioner said that beyond constructing schools, the ministry was investing in skill acquisition centres and production units, such as brick manufacturing and other technical projects designed to promote entrepreneurship and industrial growth within the state.

“Our focus is on equipping young people with the skills they need to be self-reliant and contribute to the economy. We also need more qualified teachers to strengthen our technical education system, and we are working towards addressing that”, Ufoh stated

The Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to skill development and youth empowerment through technical education.

He said the 2026 budget was designed to complete ongoing projects, strengthen technical institutions, and enhance skill acquisition programmes across the state. He noted that the Ministry of Technical Education has continued to make steady progress in its mission to reposition technical learning in the Delta.

”Beyond constructing schools, the ministry is investing in skill acquisition centres and production units, such as brick manufacturing and other technical projects designed to promote entrepreneurship and industrial growth within the state”

”Delta State Ministry of Technical Education remains aligned with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda — which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security — emphasising that technical education is central to the administration’s vision for sustainable development.

“With the continued support of the government and citizens, the state’s technical education system will produce highly skilled graduates capable of driving innovation, industry, and economic transformation in Delta State”, Ufoh stated.
