Delta CP Warns Officers Against Extortion, Unauthorized Phone Searches, Emphasizes on Professionalism

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, on Tuesday, held a strategic meeting with senior officers of the Command at the Police Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters in Asaba. The session was in line with the recent directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM.

Drawing from the IGP’s guidance, the CP laid out a clear, results-oriented vision for the next phase of operations. He stressed the importance of intelligence-driven patrols, professional conduct during highway enforcement, and strict adherence to human rights.

In his address, CP Olufemi issued a stern warning to Area Commanders, DPOs, tactical units, and other personnel, making it clear that extortion in any form would not be tolerated under his watch. He further emphasized that officers have no right to stop individuals at random and search their phones, warning that any officer caught engaging in such misconduct would face serious disciplinary action.

CP Abaniwonda Olufemi reinforced the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion, unlawful detention, and the use of excessive force. He instructed senior officers to improve both pre-deployment briefings and post-deployment debriefings to ensure better operational outcomes. He also called for firm but respectful enforcement on highways, urging teams to intensify intelligence gathering in known trouble spots, including areas prone to kidnappings and robberies. In line with the IGP’s push for inter-agency collaboration, he emphasized the need for continued coordination with other security agencies and close engagement with local communities.

The CP assured Delta State residents that the state’s security network will remain strong—and will be further intensified—throughout the “ember months” and the festive season.

He directed Area Commanders, DPOs, and tactical unit leaders to relay these instructions down the ranks, ensuring consistent understanding, strict compliance, and full accountability.

Finally, he encouraged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity by visiting the nearest police station or calling the Command’s emergency line at 08036684974.
