Delta State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing road safety by making the State Road Safety Advisory Council (SARSAC) more functional and impactful.
Sir Onyeme made the assurance on Thursday in Asaba during a courtesy visit by Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Delta State.
The Deputy Governor expressed satisfaction that SARSAC has already been domesticated in Delta State in line with the National Road Safety Strategy approved by the National Executive Council, noting that the state is ready to intensify implementation for improved road safety outcomes.
He recalled his long-standing relationship with the FRSC, dating back to his days as Executive Chairman of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service (DSIRS), where both agencies frequently collaborated on motor licensing and other vehicle administration matters.
“I have been very close to the State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps. Apart from being a Special Marshal, my engagements with the command grew during my time as the Executive Chairman of DSIRS because one of our major responsibilities was motor licensing,” he said.
He emphasized that collaboration between the state government and FRSC remains critical in ensuring safer roads, secure vehicles, and improved compliance with traffic regulations.
“The major thing you talked about here is for us to collaborate, to make sure that our roads are safe and our vehicles are secured through your activities.
“You also mentioned that the State Advisory Road Safety Council be made more active.
“I assure you that we will work with your team to make it more functional because it is already domesticated in line with the National Road Safety Strategy as approved by the Federal Executive Council,” he added.
Sir Onyeme further noted that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is always open to partnerships with federal agencies, stressing that such collaborations ultimately benefit the people of Delta State.
“As a government, we are always willing and ready to partner with agencies of the Federal Government because our people are the beneficiaries of your services.
“We want safer roads, especially as we prepare for Christmas,” he said.
Earlier, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander stated that her visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the FRSC and the state government. She appealed for increased support to make SARSAC more effective in delivering its statutory responsibilities.
She commended the state government for its ongoing support and expressed confidence that enhanced collaboration would further reduce road crashes and improve traffic management across Delta State.
The meeting reinforced the mutual resolve of both the state government and the FRSC to advance road safety initiatives, particularly as the festive season approaches and road traffic increases.
