Delta First Lady Champions Inclusive Education

Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, wife of the Delta State Governor and founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, has officially launched the Foundation’s 2026 outreach programme with the donation of educational learning materials to two special-needs schools in Aniocha South and Aniocha North Local Government Areas.

Speaking at Abuanor Primary School in Ogwashi-Uku, Her Excellency explained that the main purpose of her visit was to support children with special needs through the provision of appropriate learning aids. She noted that such children require specially designed educational materials to improve understanding, build confidence, and support their overall growth. According to her, the initiative is targeted at closing learning gaps while also assisting teachers to deliver more effective lessons. Through the You Matter Charity Foundation, she reiterated her dedication to promoting safe learning environments, improved infrastructure, and access to essential educational resources so that every child can succeed, regardless of physical or learning limitations.

In her welcome address, the Headmistress of Abuanor Primary School, Mrs. Bethel Uzumefune, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Her Excellency for choosing the school for the intervention. She described the school, established in 1904 and formerly known as St. Peter’s School, as one of the oldest in Delta State and a UNICEF-recognized centre that has nurtured many notable individuals. Mrs. Uzumefune drew attention to the growing number of pupils with physical challenges in the school and emphasized the urgent need for teaching aids, trained specialist teachers, better classroom facilities, and enhanced security, adding that the donated materials would greatly improve teaching and learning.

At Martin Education Special Primary School in Ubulu-Uku, the Principal, Mrs. Odogbo Regina Isioma, praised Deaconess Oborevwori for her compassion and hands-on support for children with special needs. She noted that the learning aids would significantly help the school address some of its major instructional challenges, especially in catering to pupils with diverse learning abilities.

The Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Samuel Mariere, also commended Deaconess Oborevwori for placing special-needs education at the forefront and for complementing government initiatives through focused interventions. He assured the Foundation of SUBEB’s continued partnership in strengthening basic education across the state.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Sir Byron Unini, appreciated the Governor’s wife for her consistent commitment to education and the welfare of children with special needs. He assured that the Ministry would follow up on the concerns raised during the visit and thanked school administrators, teachers, and parents for their support and cooperation.

The outreach ended with the formal presentation of learning materials to both schools, amid excitement and appreciation from pupils, teachers, and parents, who described the gesture as a significant boost to special-needs education in the area.
