Delta Government Intervenes to Ease Gridlock on Effurun–Sapele Highway

In a decisive move to tackle worsening traffic congestion along the Effurun–Sapele stretch of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Highway, the Delta State Government has commenced a series of palliative and reconstruction measures to improve mobility and ease the hardship faced by road users.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, disclosed this during an inspection tour from Effurun Roundabout to Ohore Junction, where he met with contractors to evaluate progress and discuss immediate solutions for traffic flow.

Izeze said the intervention followed the directive of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who mandated swift action to provide relief to commuters amid ongoing construction works. The effort, he explained, is part of the governor’s MORE Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure renewal, mobility enhancement, and regional economic growth.

According to the commissioner, the 10-kilometre dual reconstruction project covers five kilometres on each lane and features an 8.8-metre-wide expanded carriageway, designed to meet modern highway standards.

He noted that the project’s 12-month completion timeline underscores the government’s commitment to delivering durable road infrastructure that supports both local and interstate traffic.
Izeze acknowledged the daily difficulties faced by commuters and transport operators, emphasizing that the ministry will maintain close supervision of the works to ensure sustained traffic management during the construction period.

He assured motorists that the government’s proactive approach aims to minimize travel delays and prevent further road deterioration, especially as the dry season advances.

“The governor understands the pain of road users and is determined to deliver lasting solutions,” Izeze said, reaffirming that the project would boost transportation efficiency, enhance trade, and improve residents’ quality of life once completed.

The intervention marks another strategic step in Delta’s drive toward modern, resilient road infrastructure across the state.
