Delta Govt Approves ₦10 Billion for Pension Payments, Reviews Major Infrastructure Projects

The Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the release of ₦10 billion to start clearing pension arrears left by past administrations, reinforcing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of retirees in the state.

The decision was made during the EXCO meeting held on Thursday, at the Government House in Asaba, which was chaired by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, following the directive of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who is currently away on official duty outside the state.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, explained that the approval reflects Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to relieving the hardship faced by pensioners and settling the backlog of unpaid pensions.

He noted that the initiative is in line with the MORE Agenda, which focuses on promoting welfare, inclusivity, and sustainable development for all residents of Delta State.

Aniagwu also revealed that the Council reviewed and adjusted the timelines for major infrastructure projects, including two major flyovers being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc—one at Uromi Junction in Agbor and the other at Otovwodo Junction in Ughelli.

According to him, the completion time for the Agbor flyover has been shortened from 24 months to 18, while the Ughelli flyover is now expected to be completed in 14 months instead of the original 24.

The Council also reviewed the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), presented by the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, as part of the ongoing preparations for the 2026 budget, which is expected to be submitted to the Delta State House of Assembly soon.

As part of efforts to uphold accountability, EXCO also cancelled several underperforming contracts across the state, citing the contractors’ failure to meet expected performance standards.

One of the projects affected is the Igbodo Junction–Ubulu-Uku–Ogwashi-Uku Road, which, according to him, will be reassessed and awarded to a more capable contractor.

Aniagwu also revealed that EXCO approved the official presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Engr. Mike Oghenovo Orugbo (Okporua I), the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, following his installation by the kingmakers.

He stressed that the Oborevwori administration is dedicated to people-focused governance, revitalizing infrastructure, and maintaining transparency in how projects are carried out.

He assured that the administration will keep focusing on improving human welfare, developing infrastructure, and implementing institutional reforms to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity throughout all 25 local government areas of Delta State.
