Delta Govt Cracks Down on Fake Govt Plate Numbers, Deploys ANPR Cameras Statewide

The Delta State Government has issued fresh warning to motorists using unauthorised government number plates, fake plates or obscuring their vehicle identification, declaring that the era of impunity on Delta roads is over.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, the government reminded residents of the standing directive from the Directorate of Transport prohibiting the use of unauthorised government plates, emphasising that violators will face the full wrath of the law.

“Any vehicle found with fake government plates, covered number plates or without duly registered and clearly visible plates will be impounded without further warning,” the statement read.

The renewed enforcement drive comes as the state fully activates its Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, a digital intelligence infrastructure rolled out under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.

The ANPR cameras, now operational across major highways and city centres, automatically detect traffic violations, identify stolen vehicles, track defaulters and transmit real-time data to security agencies.

Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, described the technology as a game-changer, saying, “This is not just about traffic management; it is about securing lives and property while entrenching accountability on our roads.”

Residents have hailed the initiative, with many describing it as another bold step in the governor’s digital transformation agenda.

Motorists have been given a final grace period to regularise their number plates, after which joint task forces comprising the Directorate of Transport, Vehicle Inspection Officers and security operatives will commence 24-hour enforcement.

With the ANPR system now live, Delta State is fast becoming one of Nigeria’s smartest and safest states for road users.
