Delta Govt Hails Management Excellence in Ozoro

The Delta State Government has commended the leadership of Southern Delta University Ozoro (SDU) for its impressive growth. Officials described the institution as a model for effective university administration and practical-based education.

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works and Public Information, made these remarks on Thursday. He led an inspection of completed and ongoing projects at the university campus. This visit comes ahead of the school’s first-ever convocation ceremony, scheduled for February 2026.

During the tour, Aniagwu praised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Oboreh. He noted that the VC successfully managed the institution’s transition from a polytechnic to a full university.

Furthermore, the commissioner highlighted the calm academic atmosphere at the school. He observed that SDU has avoided the industrial disputes and strikes common in other Nigerian universities.

“University strikes are often linked to poor facilities and unfavorable learning conditions,” Aniagwu stated. He explained that the state government’s deliberate policies have ensured a conducive environment for both staff and students.

In less than four years, Southern Delta University Ozoro has experienced massive growth. The student population now exceeds 13,000. Aniagwu attributed this success to strategic planning and modern learning facilities.

Additionally, the commissioner noted the unique relationship between the management and the community. He observed the Vice-Chancellor moving freely around the campus without heavy security. According to Aniagwu, this reflects a high level of trust within the university community.

One of the university’s standout features is its “hands-on” approach to education. Students at SDU do not just study theory; they participate in campus construction projects. This allows them to acquire practical skills while earning stipends.

“What distinguishes this university is its experiential learning,” Aniagwu added. He noted that graduates leave the school with real-life professional skills. Moreover, projects executed through the university’s direct labor system have proven to be of high quality and durability.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, also joined the inspection. After touring the facilities, he declared that the university is fully equipped to begin postgraduate programmes.

Professor Tonukari praised the management for using internally generated revenue to drive growth. He also revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has already approved several new academic programmes.

In conclusion, the Delta State Government remains committed to supporting its tertiary institutions. By funding salaries and accreditation exercises, the state ensures that Southern Delta University Ozoro continues to groom the next generation of leaders.
