Delta govt presents 2023 Scholarship awards to children of deceased civil servants, students with disabilities

Commissioner for Higher Education flagged-off payment of scholarship awards for children of deceased civil servants and students with disabilities

The Delta State government has reaffirmed its commitment towards ensuring that every Deltan realizes their full potential and pursue their dreams irrespective of their background or personal circumstances.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari stated this during the flag-off of payment of scholarship awards for children of deceased civil servants and students with disabilities in Delta State for the year 2023, which was held at the Delta State Bursary and scholarship board complex, Asaba.

Tonukari, in his remarks, said the presentation of the scholarship was not just financial support, but a symbol of the state government’s unwavering commitment to recognizing and supporting the educational journey of people with disabilities and children of deceased civil servants.

The Commissioner, represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Bridget Odobo said the scholarship was in tandem with the MORE Agenda of the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

In his remarks, the chairman of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Mr. Shedrack Agediga said the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has come to restore the glory in the education sector in the State and to encourage students to be more committed to their academic pursuit through the financial support of the State government.

Agediga noted that the administration was ready to go the extra mile to support indigent citizens who are in dire need of support for their academic enhancement irrespective of their personal circumstances.

He revealed that the aim of the financial scheme is to alleviate the financial stress of Deltans in their academic pursuit and discourage deviant behaviour among students in tertiary institutions. He appreciated Governor Oborevwori for the approval of the funds.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of the scholarship board, Dr. Godfrey Enitan said the scheme was put in place to arrest the tendency to drop out from school by children as a result of the death of their parents who were civil servants who died during active service, and to encourage them to achieve their academic zenith.

Enitan said the present administration was committed to cushioning the economic crunch deceased civil servants pass through as a result of the loss of their spouse as well as supporting persons with disabilities in the State to pursue their dreams.

Dr. Enita revealed that the government was committed to bringing happiness to the citizenry in order to enhance the level of manpower production.

There were also goodwill messages from the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Dr. Okoh Oghenetega and the President, National Association of Delta State Students, NADESSTU, Comrade Monday Wiska.

Beneficiaries of the scholarship awards thanked the State Governor for the gesture while also pleading for a review of the amount for the financial assistance.

The ceremony featured presentation of scholarship awards to widows of deceased civil servants and persons with disabilities. The recipients include 627 children of deceased civil servants and 60 students with disabilities, spanning across the three levels of education.
