Stakeholders from across Delta State converged in Sapele for a high-level engagement on the Sapele Smart City Project, an ambitious housing and urban renewal initiative aimed at delivering 1,000 affordable housing units to residents of the fast-growing industrial town.
The meeting, held as part of ongoing consultations under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, focused on aligning government, private-sector partners, and community representatives toward the successful execution of the project.
Launched in September 2025, the Sapele Smart City Project was conceived as a strategic response to escalating rental costs and housing deficits that have placed increasing pressure on middle- and low-income earners.
Officials confirmed that construction is progressing ahead of the May 2026 commissioning timeline, with the site already preparing for integrated infrastructure that includes road networks, renewable-energy power systems, water reticulation, green spaces, and digital connectivity.
Speaking at the forum, Mr. Emmanuel Kuejubola, CEO of Deboswan Ventures Ltd—the project’s primary developer—described the initiative as a “transformational urban model” designed to merge affordability with modern living standards. He emphasised that strong collaboration among government ministries, financiers, and private contractors remains key to the successful delivery of the housing units.
Architect Akpomine Benjamin, Director of Residential Housing at the Delta State Ministry of Housing, highlighted the project’s architectural framework, noting that the designs incorporate climate-responsive features, energy efficiency, and community-friendly layouts.
He added that the Smart City would not only ease overcrowding in Sapele but also stimulate new economic clusters by attracting investments and expanding the local job market.
Also speaking at the event, Mr Blessing Idume, Delta Trust Branch Manager, Warri, noted the readiness to support prospective homeowners through accessible mortgage products. He said the financial sector’s involvement was essential to ensuring long-term affordability and expanding homeownership opportunities for civil servants, business owners, and low-income families.
Participants at the meeting commended the state government for prioritising affordable housing as a driver of social stability and economic development.
Stakeholders agreed that the Smart City Project stands to reshape Sapele’s urban landscape, providing dignified living spaces while strengthening infrastructure and improving quality of life for thousands of residents.
