Delta Hosts NAPHER-SD Conference on Revitalizing Physical, Health Education

Delta State Commissioner for Primary and Basic Education, Mrs Rose Ezewo, has urged key stakeholders in Physical and Health Education to demonstrate passionate commitment towards reform and embrace modern skill sets capable of producing competitive athletes for the state.

The Primary and Basic Education Commissioner made the call at the 26th Annual State Conference and Workshop of the Nigeria Association for Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD), Delta State Chapter, held at the Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, Ethiope West Local Government Area.

Addressing participants at the state conference of the Nigeria Association for Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance with the theme “Revitalizing Physical and Health Education in Nigeria: Transforming Lives through Innovations, Inclusions and Sustainable Strategies, Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerowho Tonukari, affirmed that when awareness and knowledge of physical and health education are embraced by all stakeholders, the ripple effect will be seen in the state’s sporting potential.

Prof. Tonukari stressed that Delta has always been at the forefront of producing national and international athletes.

He maintained that conferences of this nature are crucial in building capacity, reorienting lecturers and teachers, as well as encourage active involvement in the promotion of physical and health education.

In his welcome address, Chairman of NAPHER-SD, Delta State, Mr. Godspower Odede, described this year’s theme as apt, saying it is a reminder that physical and health education is not a side subject but the very foundation of talent discovery, physical fitness, social inclusion, and unity.

Host of the event and Provost of the Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, who commended NAPHER-SD for bringing the conference to the college, which he said has long served as a centre for grassroots sports development , also appealed for government support in revamping facilities to further enhance Delta’s status as Nigeria’s hub of sporting talents.

Keynote speaker and National Secretary of NAPHER-SD, Dr. France Atare, alongside Dr. Solomon Ogbomah and Dr. Blessing Erumi, delivered insightful papers highlighting the evolving landscape of physical and health education.

They urged instructors to show passion and dedication in raising young champions who would serve as national assets, physically and mentally prepared for the future.

Goodwill messages from a Executive Director, DESOPADEC Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, and Pastor Tony Pemu, Chairman of the occasion who was represented, among other dignitaries, praised NAPHER-SD’s immense contributions to grassroots sports growth and national development.

The event climaxed with the presentation of recognition awards to deserving coaches, members, and participants, as well as conferring patron status on select individuals for their contributions to sports development in Delta State.
