Delta Launches Kwale Free Trade Zone, Okowa Lauds Oborevwori’s Leadership

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has reaffirmed his confidence in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, commending his leadership, vision, and commitment to sustaining key developmental projects across the state.

Speaking on Tuesday at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kwale Free Trade Zone (KFTZ) in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Okowa described Oborevwori as a leader who has demonstrated “clear capacity” despite facing intense political opposition in 2022.

The KFTZ, a major component of Delta’s industrial transformation agenda, is designed to serve as a strategic hub for manufacturing, energy, and logistics leveraging the area’s abundant gas reserves to drive large-scale investment and job creation.

Governor Oborevwori, who performed the groundbreaking, described the project as “a promise made, promise kept.” He stated that the initiative would unlock unprecedented economic growth, positioning Kwale as a vital node in the South-South’s emerging industrial corridor.

According to the governor, eight companies have already shown firm interest in operating within the zone. He revealed that the state government has invested over ₦3 billion in Delta Wires Industries, the first enterprise to commence production of conductors and gas cylinders within the trade zone.

Former Governor Okowa, who chaired the event, lauded his successor for his commitment to project continuity and purposeful governance.

“We have a governor who was prepared for the job and is doing it the way it ought to be done,” he said.

“Governor Oborevwori has continued where we stopped, and that is how great leaders build lasting progress.”

Okowa expressed satisfaction that his choice of Oborevwori as successor had been justified by his performance, urging Ndokwa communities to rally behind the project.

The KFTZ has already secured over $100 million in committed private investments, expected to create thousands of jobs and lay a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth in Delta State.

Officials describe the zone as a catalyst for industrial revival and economic renaissance in the Niger Delta and the wider South-South region.
