The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has confirmed the passing of one of its members, Vivian Nkechika, a broadcaster with the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) in Asaba.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by the council’s chairman, Churchill Oyowe, though no information was given about the circumstances of her death.
Nkechika’s passing comes just weeks after the death of another journalist in the state, Matthew Ochei of The PUNCH newspapers, who died in early January and is set to be buried on February 19.
Reacting to the loss, the NUJ said it was deeply saddened, describing her death as another painful blow to the journalism community in Delta State. As a mark of respect, the union directed that all activities on its platforms be suspended for a minimum of 12 hours.
The council also urged members to use the period to reflect and pay tribute to Nkechika, noting that she will be greatly missed by her colleagues and the wider professional family.
