The Delta State Police Command says it has made significant progress in its fight against crime, with the arrest of 34 suspected internet fraudsters and the capture of an armed robbery suspect in separate, intelligence-driven operations across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, made this known in a statement on Monday, explaining that coordinated efforts by officers led to the bust of a cybercrime ring and the recovery of illegal weapons.
In one of the operations, officers of the Quick Response Squad, led by SP Collins Arrey, carried out a raid on March 28, 2026, at a suspected internet fraud hideout in Opete after receiving a distress call. The alert came from a concerned individual who claimed her younger brother was being held against his will and forced into online fraud.
Acting on the tip-off, the team stormed the location and uncovered what appeared to be a well-structured syndicate operating from a residential apartment turned into a cybercrime base.
During the raid, 34 suspects were arrested. Items recovered included 37 laptops, an iPad, seven mobile phones, and a calabash believed to contain charms suggesting the operation was both organised and extensive.
Police sources say investigations are ongoing, as there are indications the suspects may be linked to a wider network.
In a separate incident on March 29, 2026, operatives from the Department of Operations stopped a tricycle along the Ogbolu/Illah Road under suspicious circumstances. While the rider initially cooperated, one of the passengers suddenly fled into a nearby bush.
Officers chased and apprehended the suspect, who reportedly resisted arrest by attacking them with a wooden object but was eventually subdued.
A search of the tricycle led to the discovery of a locally made cut-to-size gun loaded with two live cartridges, reinforcing suspicions of criminal activity.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Mustapha Musa from Kogi State, was arrested alongside the tricycle rider, 34-year-old Iyanosor Ogbizi. Both men remain in police custody as investigations continue, with the recovered weapon undergoing further examination.
Reacting to the developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, said the successes highlight the command’s renewed focus on intelligence-led policing and rapid response to threats.
He also called on residents to stay alert and continue sharing useful information with the police, noting that community cooperation is key to maintaining security across the state.
