A tragic drug-related death involving a teenager has pushed the Delta State Police Command to step up its crackdown on drug dens, blackspots, and criminal hideouts across the state. Authorities say the renewed effort is aimed at breaking up illegal networks that are driving substance abuse and related violence.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the Command said the move comes amid growing concern over the rising number of drug-related cases, especially among young people, and the threat this poses to public safety.
The police cited a disturbing incident in Orogun, where a 15-year-old boy, Gift Oberhirhi, reportedly died after taking an overdose of Dexamethasone tablets he allegedly got from a friend of the same age, Destiny Akpofure. According to reports, the teenager took about fifteen tablets without any medical guidance, became seriously ill, and died while being rushed for treatment.
Officers quickly responded to the situation, visited the scene, and moved the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Orogun for an autopsy. The other teenager involved has since been arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.
The Command described the incident as a painful reminder of the risks linked to the illegal sale and misuse of controlled drugs, particularly among vulnerable groups like teenagers. It added that the case highlights the need for stronger enforcement against those involved in the unlawful drug trade.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that firm steps are being taken to curb drug-related crimes.
He also called on residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities, especially those involving the sale or use of illegal drugs, to the nearest police station to support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
