Operatives of the Eagle Net Special Squad, attached to the Ughelli Surveillance Team, have arrested a 67-year-old woman in Ughelli, Delta State, over the alleged production and distribution of adulterated alcoholic drinks.
The suspect, identified as Lydia Osanebi, was apprehended on December 14, 2025, at about 7:30 a.m., following a search operation carried out at her residence and business premises on 14th Street, Otor-Edor, Ughelli, based on credible intelligence.
According to Delta State Police Command PPRO, SP Edafe Bright on Friday, the operatives executed a duly obtained search warrant, during which they uncovered large quantities of dangerous chemicals believed to include methanol, formalin and cochineal (carminic acid).
Also recovered were empty and newly printed seals, packaging materials bearing various dry gin brand labels, super glue, stickers, shot glasses and more than 60 litres of suspected counterfeit and adulterated dry gin.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly made a voluntary confession, admitting that she had been producing and repackaging adulterated dry gin using recycled original bottles for over 20 years.
Preliminary investigations revealed that methanol, one of the substances recovered, is highly toxic and poses serious health risks.
Medical experts warn that ingestion of methanol can lead to severe complications, including organ failure, permanent blindness, coma and death.
Edafe said investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of distribution of the adulterated products and to identify other individuals who may be involved in the illicit operation.
The Command have also issued a renewed warning to members of the public to be cautious about the consumption of unverified alcoholic drinks, stressing the dangers associated with counterfeit beverages and the need for vigilance to protect public health.
