What began as a personal birthday celebration for Mrs. Timiebi Guwor, wife of the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, evolved into a major empowerment initiative on Thursday in Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri South-West Local Government Area.
In partnership with the Guwor Emomotimi Dennis Foundation and the You Matter Charity Foundation, the event was redefined as the “Timiebi Guwor Market Women Support Scheme 2025,” a programme designed to uplift women-led micro-businesses and strengthen grassroots commerce.
Under the scheme, 150 market women received ₦400,000 each, amounting to ₦60 million in direct capital support for small enterprises.
The outreach extended further as representatives of the celebrant toured Main Market and Ogbe-Ijoh Market, where 20 petty traders were randomly selected for cash gifts ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦100,000 to boost their immediate business needs.
Mrs. Guwor said the initiative reflected her belief in celebrating through impact, noting that market women remain vital to local economic stability. She stressed that empowering vendors of locally sourced goods aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen community livelihoods and support broader economic reforms.
The Speaker and his wife personally engaged with beneficiaries, listening to their challenges and offering words of encouragement. Many recipients described the support as a lifeline that would stabilize their businesses during tough economic conditions.
The event drew government officials, community leaders and market executives, highlighting the rising emphasis on community-focused development in Delta State. A modest cake-cutting ceremony rounded off the occasion, but the empowerment programme is expected to leave a lasting imprint on households and marketplaces across Warri South-West.
