In a vibrant showcase of grassroots solidarity and sportsmanship, the Delta State Councillors Solidarity Cup 2026 officially commenced today at the Nana College Field in Warri.
The tournament, which unites local government councillors from all 25 local government areas across the state, got underway with an electrifying opening match that highlighted both competitive spirit and the power of sports to foster collaboration.
The inaugural fixture pitted councillors from Warri South Local Government Area against their counterparts from Warri South-West Local Government Area.
Warri South’s team delivered a dominant performance, securing a convincing 6-0 victory.
The high-scoring encounter featured sharp attacking play, solid defending, and enthusiastic crowd support, setting an energetic tone for the competition.
Organized under the inspiring theme “Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda Through Grassroots Unity, Solidarity and Victory,” the Solidarity Cup aims to strengthen ties among councillors while promoting community engagement and alignment with the development priorities of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Rt. Hon. Samuel Ekpemupolo, Chairman of the 25 Local Government Councillors Forum, emphasized the event’s deeper purpose during the opening ceremony.
“This tournament is more than just football—it’s about building stronger relationships, demonstrating teamwork, and showing our communities that unity drives progress,” he stated.
He noted that participants from every local government area are involved, making it one of the most inclusive legislator-led sporting events in the state’s recent history.
The ceremony drew notable dignitaries, including Chief Favour Izoukumor from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), former Warri South Local Government Chairman Dr. Michael Tidi, and current Warri South Chairman Hon. Agbayeyiniro Weyinmi Isaac.
Their presence underscored the tournament’s significance in bridging governance and community life.
Matches will continue over the coming weeks at various venues statewide, culminating in a grand finale scheduled for April 16, 2026, in Asaba.
As the competition progresses, it serves as a powerful reminder that sports remain a vital tool for promoting harmony, discipline, and collective aspiration in Delta State.
