The Delta State Government has launched a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening governance, leadership, and management structures across tertiary institutions in the state.
Declaring the workshop open on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, said the initiative reflects the administration’s dedication to effective and accountable governance in education. The event, themed “Effective Governance in Tertiary Institutions: Challenges, Opportunities, and Best Practices,” is organized by the Ministry of Higher Education in collaboration with Space Spectrum Limited, and is taking place at Jace Darl Hotels and Suites, Okpanam.
Dr. Emu emphasized that the Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda focused on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security places education at the center of Delta’s sustainable development goals. He noted that effective governance in higher education remains crucial for nurturing the skilled human capital needed to propel the state’s economic and social growth.
“Our tertiary institutions are not just centers of learning but engines of innovation and progress. We are committed to embedding governance systems that reflect global best practices, yet remain tailored to our local realities,” Dr. Emu said.
The workshop aims to tackle challenges such as funding shortages, administrative bottlenecks, and leadership accountability, while highlighting opportunities for digital transformation, institutional autonomy, and academic excellence.
Participants including heads of institutions, administrators, and education stakeholders praised the initiative, describing it as timely and visionary. Many noted that such efforts align with research showing that improved governance structures in African universities can raise graduation rates by up to 30 percent, enhance transparency, and boost research outcomes.
The workshop continues Friday with technical sessions and strategy discussions expected to shape the future of higher education governance in Delta State.
