Delta State House of Assembly Perform Oversight Functions at Ughelli LGAs

Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has charged local government councils in the state to give priority attention to security, alongside the development of basic infrastructures.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon Chukwudi Dafe, who represents Ukwuani Constituency in the House, gave the charge, when members visited Ughelli North and South in continuation of oversight visits to local government councils in the state.

Addressing the Chairmen and officials of the two councils, Dafe said development can only thrive in an environment of peace and tranquility, and commended the efforts of the councils in that regard.

The Lawmaker, flanked by his colleagues, including Hon Emmanuel Sinebe, Ferguson Onwo, Austin Uroye, and Isaac Anwuzia, however stressed the need for them to do more to ensure safety of lives and property at all times.

Hon Dafe maintained that the oversight tour is a constitutional obligation and was not meant to witch-hunt anybody, noting that the visit would help reconcile revenue received from the federation allocation by the councils with capital and recurrent expenditures.

While applauding the projects executed by both chairmen, the Lawmaker urged them to initiate more people oriented projects towards uplifting standards at the grassroots.

Hon Dafe pledged the support of the committee at all times, even as he expressed appreciation to members of the committee for their commitment to the legislative assignment.

Chairman, Ughelli South, Hon Lucky Avweromre, said the familiarization visit would foster a more harmonious relationship between the State Assembly and the local government councils.

He disclosed that his administration had embarked on renovations of the Secretariat complex and the administrative building for staff, amongst other critical projects within the period under review.

For his part, Chairman, Ughelli North, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, described the visit as a welcome development, saying it will spur the Councils to do more for the people.

He briefed the Lawmakers of progress made so far in various areas of governance since the inception of his administration and assured of his irrevocable commitment to add values to the welfare of the people as well as peace, security and infrastructural development.

So far the Committee has visited Warri North, Sapele, Warri South, Uvwie, Ethiope East and Ethiope West, Ughelli North and Ughelli South local government councils.
